do not mention the war

Michael Owen announces his retirement

In Football on March 19, 2013 at 22:17

Michael Owen, once a great goalscorer, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2001 has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of this season.

This short clip video shows Owen in one of his best games for England, scoring a hat trick against Germany. For England it was the first victory for more than 30 years; the last time was in a friendly in Nuremberg, 1965.

Many will remember his goal against Argentina in 1998. For a blog about the Anglo-German Football Rivalry however, his performance in Munich in September 2001 will never be forgotten.

  1. “The last time was in a friendly in Nuremberg, 1965.” For sure?

  2. Don’t mention 66?

    • Two points to answer your question.
First, Wembley is in England, not Germany. Second, why mention ’66? Just because the post, no the whole blog, is about the Anglo-German love/hate relationship when it comes to football? We don’t want to become like the English who can’t stop mentioning 1966 every time they participate in a Football World Cup or they play against Germany during a Weltmeister- oder Europameisterschaft.
